Very old technique indeed. You can see the same types of random designs in old books on the inside covers. Book binders were doing this and trying to generate patterns. What this guys does is one-offs. Pretty cool. I did try a bunch at my art school in France back in 1992. There was a book binding dept. It is not as easy as it looks, let me tell you!
